FUNDAMENTAL CHESS TACTICS AND STRATEGIES

Becoming a great chess player and winning game after game at amateur or international championship levels depend largely on one’s ability to understand the strategies and tactics involved in winning; but more importantly, how to apply that knowledge to countering every of the opponent’s moves. Below are some of the most important ones to remember.

In-play exchange

There would always be that time to exchange your piece for another of your opponent’s. The rule, however, is never to exchange because it feels good or because your opponent has taken more of your pieces and you need to ‘balance’ the number of pieces on the board. That is suicidal! Exchange your piece for another, strictly, and only when it is beneficial to you.

It can be beneficial in a couple of ways. It is wise to exchange pieces:

when the move opens up the opponent’s King;

when you have more pieces than your opponent;

when your piece is of lesser value than the one you are capturing in return;

when you need to clear more space in a cramped situation – allowing you more freedom to maneuver your attack;

when you need to stop an impending attack. Taking out one or two leading attack pieces by exchanging one or two of yours would not only stop an attack, it leaves the opponent confused and in need to go back and re-strategize opening for you the opportunity to turn Defense into attack.
